Homelessness is often perceived to be a metropolitan problem. In actual fact, a significant proportion of people experiencing homelessness are in regional, rural and remote Australia. The risk of homelessness in rural and remote areas is extremely high due to a greater likelihood of low incomes, high living costs and poor housing options relative to regional and metropolitan centres and on Thursday 8 August 2019 our local community came together in solidarity to do something about it.

33 participants slept out on a cold and chilly night with nothing more than a few sheets of cardboard, soup and bread for a meal to raise vital funds for those doing it tough in our local area. Over $14,500 was raised. These funds will allow the St Vincent de Paul Society Deniliquin St Michael’s Conference Centre to assist people in the local region who are experiencing financial hardship. This assistance takes on many forms such as vouchers to assist with electricity bills, assistance with rental arears (in exceptional circumstances), food support and affordable clothing, footwear and household needs.

On behalf of the people we assist, thank you to all our participants and sponsors for your involvement in this amazing result. We couldn’t have done it without your wonderful dedication and support.
