There are more than 116,000 Australians experiencing homelessness. Alarmingly, approximately 60,000 of these are under the age of 35, and more than 17,000 children under the age of 12 don’t have a stable place to call home. Every night there are in excess of 350 people across the Riverina who are experiencing homelessness with many of them being the youth of our community and on Friday 30 August 2019 our local community came together in solidarity to do something about it.
67 participants slept out on a cold and chilly night with nothing more than a few sheets of cardboard, soup and bread for a meal to raise vital funds to realise a new youth initiative program for the Riverina. Over $33,000 was raised and will fund this project which aims to support young people who are experiencing homelessness who have the desire to connect with education, employment and training, through personal development, skill development and work related activities. Participants will be assisted in activities to boost their confidence and motivation to more proactively seek to obtain competencies to advance training or employment opportunities and engage work related activities including work tasters.
On behalf of the people we assist, thank you to all our participants and sponsors for your involvement in this amazing result. We couldn’t have done it without your wonderful dedication and support.
